Each time a prominent awards ceremony nears, there’s always an outcry for introducing additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
My colleague made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types actually cover numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything in 2014
- Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
- Popular arranging title was overlooked recently
- Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles globally continuing this trend for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary game development, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
