The Former President's Woke Warning Overlooks The Continent's True Danger: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a misguided view of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" agendas represent an grave threat to European civilization. Yet, this perspective is based on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The true danger facing Europe is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Growth Divide Separating the US and Europe

The data paint a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, while a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. During this period, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly 50% of the global 50 largest technology firms are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Question

This widening disparity is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the US, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of global tech leadership is decidedly US-centric. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at over $10bn, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap raises a pressing question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does the EU positioned? Most analysts concede it is essentially a contest between two involving the US and China, with European nations entering at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of major factors explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a genuine capital markets union, a factor that caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hamper Europe. A US startup can launch a product under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is divided among twenty-seven different national systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are causes for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to advance serious reform. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of major reforms.

With the right policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains considerable strengths: high-quality workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating next-generation tech, it can still significantly boost productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a decisive moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
