Pat Cummins bowling

Australia's selection chief the selector has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about his chances of taking part.

"We know that the window is narrowing and various factors involved, aside from the back issue, but further aspects," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a major part. Ideally it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
