An underground economy for unapproved weight-loss medications is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on messaging platforms, based on recent findings.

Separately, a flourishing market exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of members share comparison photos, injection guides and assertions of next-day British shipping. Vendors promote the substance there before redirecting customers to other platforms for transactions.

Retatrutide is an experimental injection created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug targets three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. After minutes of entering one group, a vendor shared contact information, where most transactions occur. The vendor provided an guidebook and promised delivery within two days. When questioned whether the product was authentic, one seller said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a alleged testing documentation. None inquired about weight, health issues or previous experience.
