A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
